Michelle Manes
- Professor in the Department of Mathematics at UH Manoa and Program Officer at the National Science Foundation
Michelle Manes earned her Ph.D. at Brown University in 2007, spent a year as a postdoc at USC, and joined the Mathematics Department at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2008, where she is now a full professor. Since 2018, she has been working as a temporary Program Officer in the Division of Mathematical Sciences at the National Science Foundation. Michelle’s primary research interests are in arithmetic dynamics, but she does work more broadly in arithmetic geometry as well. Prior to pursuing her Ph.D., she worked for several years in K-12 education. She has taught mathematics at every level from third grade through graduate school. She has worked at a private school for Deaf students (where she taught in American Sign Language); in a summer program for middle school girls (where she taught both math and martial arts); and at a public charter school in Boston. She has a special interest in doing math with K-12 teachers. She helped to start a Math Teachers’ Circle in Hawaii (which has been running since 2011), and if you have insomnia some night you might catch her on TV leading a geometry workshop for K-8 teachers. Michelle loves doing math, learning new math, teaching math to other people, and swimming in the ocean. And dogs.
