Originally from Honolulu, Daithi moved to the frigid north of New Hampshire during high school, where he learned to snowboard, following in the footsteps of the infamous Johnny Tsunami. He followed his love of the frozen waves to attend the University of Montana, where he became a rock climbing and white water kayaking instructor while receiving his BS in Forestry Resource Conservation. He then lived a split life as a white water kayak guide and a research chemist before returning to school for an MS in Computer Science at the University of Montana. Feeling the call of home, he returned to the Islands to pursue a Ph.D. at the University of Hawaii Manoa. His research applies modern Machine Learning techniques to Hawaii’s climate change issues. He continues to live the double life of adventure and academics, so if you can’t find him in the office, check the waves, the rivers, or the snow.
