We’re seeking college students eager to explore Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT in the contexts of climate change and academic advising. 

Dive into the world of AI and Large Language Models, analyze vital data, and craft messages that spark change. This year, we’re expanding our focus to include the development of AI chatbots for student advising and success, alongside ways to effectively communicate scientific findings to a broader audience. Collaborate with like-minded peers and make a real-world impact in both environmental sustainability and educational enhancement.

Successful completion of the program provides a $3,000 stipend and valuable research experience in AI and NLP, beneficial for both academic and professional growth.

Program Requirements:

  • The program is open to all undergraduates from all majors with a keen interested in Natural Language Processing (NLP) and AI.
  • A strong inclination towards working with data, AI, and NLP is preferred.
  • Participants are required to be available from May 20th, 2024, to June 28th, 2024, for both in-person and remote participation.
  • Participants will gain hands-on experience and deep insights into NLP and AI, focusing on applications in sustainability and education.
  • The program includes a course on NLP and AI, taught by experienced UH Hilo professors, where students will engage in relevant projects and explore academic opportunities in data science at UH Hilo.
